The history and craftsmanship behind Liberty Tana Lawn™ cotton

Liberty Tana Lawn™ cotton is one of the most exquisite and sought-after fabrics in the textile industry. Known for its luxurious feel, vibrant designs, and impeccable quality, it has captivated fabric lovers for decades. Here are five key questions and answers about the history and craftsmanship of this iconic fabric.
What is the history of Tana Lawn™ cotton?
Tana Lawn™ cotton has a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. Arthur Lasenby Liberty, founder of Liberty London, sought to create a fabric that combined the softness of silk with the versatility of cotton. Inspired by the fine cotton discovered near Lake Tana in Ethiopia, Liberty developed a unique smooth plain weave with a luxurious ultra-soft feel, with unique durable qualities. Over the years, Tana Lawn™ cotton has become synonymous with quality craftsmanship and timeless design.
Why is it called Tana Lawn™?
The name "Tana Lawn" originates from Lake Tana in Ethiopia, where the unique long-staple cotton fibres used in its creation were first sourced. Once brought to the UK, these silk-like threads were expertly spun into a fine, lustrous fabric, printed with vibrant inks, and transformed into a material that revolutionized the textile industry. Liberty developed Tana Lawn™ as a high-quality alternative to silk, offering durability, breathability, and a luxurious feel.
Where is Liberty Tana Lawn™ cotton made?
Today, every bolt of Liberty Tana Lawn™ cotton is the product of a bespoke production process: designed by the in-house studio artists, then printed at Liberty’s own Italian mill, close to Lake Como. Skilled technicians oversee the production of many hundreds of different designs, using a combination of traditional screen printing and cutting-edge digital printing techniques. The cotton fibre used in Tana is grown in India, Egypt and the US.
What makes Tana Lawn™ so soft and lightweight?
Unlike regular cotton, Tana Lawn™ undergoes a special finishing process that gives it a silk-like texture. It is lightweight, breathable, and incredibly smooth against the skin, making it a favourite for clothing, accessories, and luxury home textiles.
What makes Tana Lawn™ a sustainable choice?
Liberty Tana Lawn™ cotton is produced using eco-conscious methods, including responsible sourcing of long-staple cotton and environmentally friendly printing techniques. Its durability also reduces fabric waste, making it a sustainable choice for fashion and crafts.
